Community health workers are an essential part of primary care. Until recently, community health workers (CHWs) have been part-time, unpaid volunteers. It’s never worked. A number of Mulago organizations focus on transforming CHWs into bona fide health professionals. As individual organizations, they’ve each had outstanding impact and integration with their government partners. Together, they’ve created an emergent practitioner group —the Community Health Impact Coalition (CHIC) — to advance this solution worldwide.
CHIC provides a platform for CHW organizations to advocate for policy change, mobilize financing, coordinate a shared research agenda, and share best practices. Together they speak with a louder voice when they call for all community health workers to be salaried, skilled, supervised, supplied & incorporated into national strategies in order to achieve health for all.
