Why we invest

Lwala transforms Kenyan traditional birth attendants into professional (paid, trained, and supervised) community health workers (CHWs). Literacy has long been posed as a requirement for CHW recruiting, but Lwala has demonstrated through good research that non-literate CHWs can be equally effective with the right support. Their CHWs are embedded in the public health system and supported by community committees who ensure that referral facilities –clinics and hospitals –are well managed and supplied. Like several other organizations in the Mulago portfolio, Lwala is on the cutting edge of a revolution in community health care.
